Meta Youth Safety Summit

In 2022, many children had spent two years in lockdown during a pandemic — relying on internet access more than ever for their education, socialization and relaxation. However, this apparent increase in social media screen time warranted an increased need in online safety literacy. To address this growing issue, Meta — the social media company that includes Facebook and Instagram — resumed its annual Summit on Youth Safety and Well-Being for the first time since COVID began.

The one-day, small-scale event would center around providing information about tools Meta offers to ensure a safe, positive online experience. It would feature discussion during the sessions and breaks, as well as opportunities for guests to network. The hands-on experience would bring people outside of the theory and show tangible proof on the importance of internet safety while positioning Meta both as an industry leader and as an authority on these topics.

The event was held at at Convene, a brand new venue in Washington, D.C. A custom-designed main stage with auditorium-style seating served as the primary event space where safety advocates, mental health experts, educators, think tank researchers, policy writers and parents gathered to discuss the challenges of online safety. Discussions also explored opportunities to better serve teens and their families.

A series of presentations were designed that demonstrated Meta’s Safety Tools and facilitated discussions led by the presenters. Attendees were also able to test the tools at custom-designed demo stations. The summit concluded with a VIP, invite-only reception.

Overall, the summit helped position Meta as a leading advocate of online safety. Approximately 100 guests and 50 Meta employees attended the summit, which was also broadcast live to a virtual audience. This is a perfect example of a project that falls squarely in a sweet spot: Producing excellent experiential events for high-profile clients that bridge the gap between big brands and public policy.
